SM Environmental Science Laboratory (SMESL)
The Shawnee Mission Environmental Science Laboratory (SMESL) is a 22-acre preserve at Shawnee Mission South High School that includes a woodland, prairie, pond and trails situated along Indian Creek. Established in 1969, SMESL has provided an important outdoor learning laboratory for high school students studying environmental science.
Habitats of SMESL
The Shawnee Mission Environmental Science Laboratory offers a variety of natural habitats in which students can learn and observe. In addition to the prairie, there is a woodland and wetlands including an approximately 1/4-acre pond.
SMESL as a Field Trip Destination
Annually, the Shawnee Mission Environmental Science Laboratory also offers a great connection for elementary students to learn in nature under the guidance of high school science students leading them through the SMESL's various habitats. Elementary classrooms and community groups can sign up for field trips to the SMESL.
