Ann Martin

Swimming - Class of 1998

"The sport of Swim and Dive has a long and illustrious history at Shawnee Mission South. One name that keeps appearing on the school record boards, and who won several State Championships is Ann Martin. Ann is a 1988 graduate of Shawnee Mission South. Ann won a total of 6 State Championships (individual and team) and still holds 5 school records from 1986-1988. Her coach, Bruce Bove said Ann was one of the best swimmers he ever worked with; that she could swim any event. Ann would have won additional events at the State Meet had she been able to be an entry in those events. During high school, she competed in the US Open Swim Meets, which were an off-year Olympic-level competition. She swam in the World Championships in 1986. She was named a high school All-American and participated in the 1986 Olympic Trials. Upon graduating from Shawnee Mission South, she accepted a full-ride swim scholarship to the University of Georgia. Ann worked hard – 35 hours per week in the water, foregoing proms, football games, and other high school events. She cherishes her memories at Shawnee Mission South – friendships made, swim competitions, and the teachers and coaches that helped her excel. Well Ann, you have triumphed – and you are welcomed with open arms to the most prestigious athletic group at Shawnee Mission South – congratulations on becoming a member of the Raider Athletic Hall of Fame."
