Brad Coens

Swimming - Class of 1981

""They knew when Brad was there – they were scared." These words, spoken by a coach, capture the fierce competitive spirit of Brad Coens, the newest inductee into the Raider Athletic Hall of Fame. An exceptional swimmer and all-around athlete, Brad also played football, basketball, and baseball for the Raiders, but it was in the pool where he truly made his mark.

Brad was a four-time state champion for the SM South swim and dive team. He was a member of the 1979 state champion medley relay team, claimed the 50-yard freestyle title in both 1980 and 1981, and won the 100-yard freestyle in 1980. In 1981, he finished as the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle. His contributions helped the Raiders secure their first-ever Swim/Dive State Championship as a team. A Prep All-American, Brad’s talent even earned him a spot at the 1980 Olympic Trials.

Brad’s determination was unmatched. After the Raiders placed third at the state meet during his junior year, Brad turned to Coach Bove and declared, “We’re winning this next year!” True to his word, the Raiders claimed the championship the following season. Brad’s selflessness and versatility also stood out. Although a sprinter, he volunteered to swim the backstroke his senior year to support the team, earning a second-place finish in the event.

Following his stellar high school career, Brad continued to excel, swimming for the University of Kansas. His commitment, talent, and leadership have cemented his place in Raider athletic history.

Congratulations, Brad Coens, and welcome to the Raider Athletic Hall of Fame!"
