Brent Steiner
Cross Country and Track & Field - Class of 1980
"Brent Steiner was a track & field/cross country athlete who distinguished himself with his winning, excellence, and championship success as a Shawnee Mission South Raider. He was as accomplished an athlete as has ever graduated from Shawnee Mission South. He was a member of three State Championship Track & Field teams, and one Cross Country State Championship team. While in high school, Brent won five individual State Championships, two in cross country and three in track and field - the 3200m in 1979 and 1980, and the 1600m in 1979. He was the 1979 Kinney High School Cross Country National Champion (the very first such championship) and held the all-time best Kansas state time in the 3200m with a time of 8:43.59 until 2024. With fellow 2012 inductee Steve Smith and two others, Brent is part of the 1980 school record 4x800m relay team from 1980 (7:50.7) which ranks #5 all-time in Kansas. Brent was always known as a humble yet intense competitor and was a huge contributor to some dynastic Raider track & field/cross country teams of the era. He was never satisfied with how it was, always striving for how it should be. Brent will forever be remembered as one of the greatest athletes on one of the greatest track & field and cross country teams of Shawnee Mission South history. It is with great pride that the Shawnee Mission South athletic community welcomes Brent Steiner into the Raider Athletic Hall of Fame."
