Byron Shultz
Golf - Class of 1999
"At a school where golf has a rich history of success, no player has had a more successful history than Byron Shultz. From his freshman year at SM South, Byron distinguished himself as the best player on the team, in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, and in the state of Kansas. He joined in a powerful Raider golf team and proceeded to win 3 (out of 8) tournaments that year. He ended his first season with a runner-up finish at the State Tournament, leading the Raiders to a 2nd place finish as a team. After the season, he was named All-Metro and All-League. He really distinguished himself as a sophomore. He won (or tied) 7 of the 8 regular season tournaments and the season culminated in a State Championship. He was selected as All-League, All-Metro, All-State, All-Sun County, the Kansas City Player of the Year, and he participated in the United States National Ameteur Championship. As a junior, Byron was again the State Champion golfer, was All-League, All-Metro, All-State, the Kansas City Player of the Year, and was the PGA Midwest Section Junior PGA Player of the Year. As a senior, though not the individual champion, Byron was a state medalist and led the Raiders to a very special team championship. Again, Byron was All-Metro, All-State, All-Sun County, All-Johnson County, and represented Kansas in the United States Team Championships. The impact of Byron Shultz at Shawnee Mission South High School goes well beyond his athletic accomplishments. He was a leader in the classroom and in the hallways. He was a 4-year honor roll student, the Student CouncilPresident his senior year, the Hitachi Scholar Athlete of the year in 1999, a member of the Homecoming Court, and a member of National Honor Society. He attended Tulane University upon graduation. Lyle Wingate, his high school coach, said that in spite of all the talent Byron had, his leadership ability was by far his best attribute. So Byron, as a Raider with great athletic talent, with great intelligence, and with even better leadership, you are now a Hall of Famer – welcome to the Raider Athletic Hall of Fame."
