Floyd Dorsey

Football - Class of 1994

"Floyd Dorsey was a member of one of the greatest football teams in the history of Kansas, the 1973 Shawnee Mission South Raiders. In his senior year, as both a tackle and defensive end, Floyd helped lead the Raiders to an undefeated season. As the culmination of this undefeated season, the team won the State Championship with a score of 28-0 against the SMW Vikings. This championship team only conceded 24 points over the course of the season, and Floyd was one of their most integral players. He was also an accomplished athlete in both basketball and track. Floyd was a player who could not be intimidated. Though the Raiders were coached by Raider Athletic Hall of Fame member John Davis and was quarterbacked by Raider Athletic Hall of Fame member Steve Little; the toughness, competitiveness, and grit of the 1973 team can be largely attributed to the leadership of Floyd. While it is difficult to provide statistics to prove his effectiveness as a tackle and defensive end, he was the rock of the 6-1 defense employed by Coach Davis with his skill and athleticism. He played sideline to sideline and showed a unique toughness. As one coach described him, "He was the Dick Butkus of high school football." He also earned the ultimate praise for Coach Davis, "Floyd was a football player," and in the world of football, no compliments could be greater. After high school, Floyd played football for Kansas State University for 4 years. It is with great pride that the Raider Athletic Hall of Fame welcomes another member of that legendary 1973 football team - Floyd, the Shawnee Mission South Raider Athletic Hall of Fame welcomes you."
