Greg Gurley
Basketball - Class of 1991
Greg Gurley provided the Shawnee Mission South community with one of the greatest athletic highlights in the history of the school. As a junior in the 1990 6A State Championship Tournament in Emporia, Greg hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to beat Wichita South in the championship game. It also allowed the Raiders to end the season with a 25-0 record. The legacy of that shot, leaving the "Ghost of Gurley" in and around the Shawnee Mission South gymnasium, is a legacy few athletes have. The career of Greg is unmatched in boys' basketball at Shawnee Mission South . In addition to leading the Raiders to the 1990 State Championship, Greg was a three-year starter; he led the Raiders to a 60-4 record during his three years of playing. He was a 1st team All-Sunflower League selection, 1st team All-State selection, and 1st team All-Metro selection in both 1990 and 1991. In 1991, he was selected as the DiRenna Award winner, given to the top player in the Kansas City Metro area. He was also selected as the 1991 Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year, averaging 25.1 points per game, 5.1 assists per game, 7.6 rebounds per game, shooting 57% from the field and 91% from the free throw line. He played at the University of Kansas for four years under Coach Roy Williams, was a part of three Big 8 championships and played in the Final Four in 1998. It is fitting with the basketball pedigree Greg has that he is the first boys' basketball player inducted into the Shawnee Mission South Raider Athletic Hall of Fame. The Raider Hall welcomes both Greg and the "Ghost of Gurley."
