Guy Malone

Coach and Distinguished Contributor - 2018 Inductee

Coach "Guy" Malone's contributions to Shawnee Mission South started in 1967. Coach Malone started the Shawnee Mission South wrestling program in 1968. He was head coach for 17 years and earned State runner-up finishes in 1975 and 1976 and a 3rd place state finish in 1978. He coached 3 State Champions, including current Raider Athletic Hall of Fame member, Scott Luschen. Additionally, he started the very first interscholastic intramural program for Shawnee Mission South in the early 1970's in order to provide additional opportunities for students. Coach was also a long-time assistant football coach for Raider Athletic Hall of Fame coach, John Davis. He contributed significantly to the Shawnee Mission South football State Championships in 1973 and 1975. Guy was known as a "players' coach" – tough and demanding, yet fair. However, what set Guy apart was that he was more than just a coach; he was a formidable "Master Teacher," leading the Art Department as Department Chairman for 20 years. He oversaw the expansion of class offerings within the department, engineering the development of the photography program and additional art modalities for the students at South. Finally, Guy Malone is a pillar of the traditions that have become the very soul of South. His creation of the Student Activity Council brought all students together across a multitude of activities to create a "Raider Nation," inclusive of everyone. This, in turn, established the ethos, "Once a Raider, always a Raider." His vision for the school is evident today, in the continued practice of school assemblies which always highlight the exceptional school spirit that exists at South. Raiders everywhere share in this proud moment. The Raider Athletic Hall of Fame welcomes Coach Guy Malone for his exceptional and distinguished career as a coach, teacher, and mentor.
