John Davis

Football - Head Coach

"John Davis was the first football coach in the history of Shawnee Mission South High School. He was the coach in the mid-1970's when the Shawnee Mission South Raiders were one of the most dominant teams in Kansas state history. They won the 1973 Kansas State Championship, and that championship was then followed by another in 1975. His teams were known for being well-coached, well-prepared, hard-nosed, and extremely physical. Coach Davis was known for his very demanding style, his attention to detail, and for his demand that his coaches teach fundamentals and technique. He was a coach's coach, and engendered an extremely loyal player alumnus. The legacy of Coach Davis is difficult to put into words, but his legacy is unique, respected, and greatly valued. He was a coach like no other, and Shawnee Mission South has not seen his kind since."
