"Kate Benson is recognized as one of the greatest athletes in the history of Shawnee Mission South as a two-sport star, having excelled in both volleyball and basketball. From 1992-1995, Kate led the Raiders to an 88 match winning streak and four straight trips to the Kansas volleyball State Championship semifinals, winning the State Championship in 1993. In basketball, Kate led the Raiders to the state semifinals in all four years, winning the 1995 State Championship. Kate is still the leading scorer in Kansas 6A history. She was a four-time 1st team All-Sunflower League, four-time 1st team All-Johnson County, four-time All-Metro, and consensus four-time 1st team All-State selection. She was selected as the 1995 Greater Kansas City Sports Commission's 1995 Kansas Female Athlete of the Year, and Miss Kansas Basketball - 1995."
