Kevin Rabbit
Basketball - Class of 1990
"Down by two points with seconds to play in the 1990 6A State Championship basketball game, the brilliance of Kevin Rabbitt was about to emerge. This game brought about the most famous and dramatic team event in the history of Shawnee Mission South High School – a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from about 35 feet away by Raider Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Greg Gurley, to win the State Championship. However, the play could not have been made without the calm decision making of the point guard, Kevin Rabbitt. This play epitomized the qualities that Kevin brought to the Raider basketball program – a calm, confident, and exceptional leader. Kevin's tenure for the Raiders was not marked by significant records, though he still is in the top 10 in two big categories – assists and career scoring. What set Kevin apart was his basketball IQ and his ability to slow the game down and execute plays under pressure. Kevin's greatness was recognized by the Sunflower League coaches at the time, as they selected him as the league MVP for both his junior and senior years. Though the Gurley shot was a defining moment in the history of South athletics, that moment was really a culmination of the greatness of Kevin's leadership. Kevin Rabbitt was the quintessential point guard for the Raiders during his time at South. His quiet, calm, self-assured, and humble approach largely contributed to the greatness of that Shawnee Mission South State Championship team. It is fitting that an integral member of that undefeated team is now enshrined into the Raider Athletic Hall of Fame. Kevin, the Raider Hall of Fame welcomes you."
