Ron Millard

Volleyball and Basketball Head Coach

"Ron Millard was a coaching pioneer and a teaching legend at Shawnee Mission South High School. Hired as the school's first girls' basketball coach in 1975 and as the girls' volleyball coach in 1986, Coach Millard was an early advocate to make interscholastic sports available for young women. Over his 37-year coaching career at Shawnee Mission South, hundreds of female student-athletes benefited from Coach Millard's constant commitment to equality and excellence. He worked tirelessly to ensure every player not only improved on the court, but also learned the important life lessons gained through competitive athletics. Coach Millard led the Raiders to a State Championship in both sports, taking the crown in 1993 for volleyball and in 1995 for basketball. Beyond the championships and nearly 500 career basketball victories, Coach Millard was also the long time Math Department Coordinator at Shawnee Mission South. An outstanding math teacher, his enthusiasm and commitment to excellence extended from the court to the classroom, impacting thousands of Raiders during his time. For these reasons, Ron Millard's service to Shawnee Mission South has become legendary; his dedication to our community as a coach, educator and advocate remains unmatched. It is with tremendous pride that the Shawnee Mission South Raider Athletic Hall of Fame welcomes Ron Millard."
