Ted Stealey
Football - Class of 1969
"Ted Staley was the first football player in the history of Shawnee Mission South High School to have true star power. He was described by one of his former coaches as being "Darren Sproles before there was a Darren Sproles…" Ted was known for his hard-nosed approach to the game, for his fire-hot intensity, and for being the first consensus All-State player from Shawnee Mission South. Ted was 1st team All-Metro, All-Conference, and All-State in 1968. He was the first record-holder for touchdowns in a season, scoring 21. Ted participated on the first teams of the newly opened Shawnee Mission South and helped lay the groundwork for the Raiders to become one of the most dominant football teams in Kansas state history in the 1970's. Ted went on to play football at Kansas State University under head coach Vince Gibson. Ted was a three-sport athlete at Shawnee Mission South, also lettering in wrestling and track. Ted's number 40 jersey had proven to be a hallmark at Shawnee Mission South, and will always be remembered as a number that reflects the Shawnee Mission South determination in competition and desire for excellence. As the first football star from this school, his legacy is now solidified. The Shawnee Mission South community and Raider Athletic Hall of Fame are pleased to welcome Ted Stealey."
